Egyptian returnee 'faces torture'

Human rights lawyers in the US have criticised the Pentagon's decision
to send a detainee at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp back to his
native Egypt.
Sami al-Laithi was transferred at the weekend after being held without
charge at the camp for more than three years.

Lawyers for the New York-based Center for Constitutional Rights said
there was a risk he could be jailed or tortured in Egypt.

The Pentagon said Egypt had guaranteed he would be treated humanely.

According to the US State Department's annual report on human rights,
torture of prisoners by Egyptian security forces is common.
