PRIVATE INVESTMENT: MAKES AFRICA POOR
Anyone remember the pronouncements by Blair and Brown, Bono and Sir Bob, earlier this year about saving Africa? The white knights riding to the rescue were specifically named as the forces of private enterprise, as part of a package of measures that included fine-sounding phrases about aid, trade and 'better governance'. It is only weeks later, yet this September those illusions seem so shallow -- with little aid, no real debt 'relief', and many NGOs roundly condemning the G8/Live8 deals as enforcing further economic restructuring on poor countries.

BEAT THE INTERNET SNOOPERS
A lot of websites these days require you to sign up before acessing their content. Even if they don't ask you for money, you still have to fill out a form with a bewildering array of details, including your job, your earnings, shoe size, dog's name, etc. Why do they do this? So that they can sell these details to marketing companies that use it to target advertising towards different sections of the population.

BAYER TO MARKET CANNABIS MEDICINE
Battles over the legalisation of cannabis continue, in the UK and globally. In the UK this has resulted in muddles over the re-classification of cannabis to Class C. On the one hand there has been an apparent 'relaxation' of the law towards medical use -- but this has been coupled with police harassment and imprisonment of medical user Colin Davis, who opened a cannabis cafe in Stockport.

OUR 'FREE PRESS' -- HIDING THE REAL NEWS
We live in a free society, with a free media -- everyone knows that. But somehow... certain stories seem to just 'happen' to slip through the gaps in our free press, and remain in obscurity; and this often includes important stories about corporate and government power. There's a reason for this: the press feeds off official releases from reputable bodies, such as government departments, major companies and NGOs; investigating and publicising stories not already made safe and acceptable is far more expensive in terms of resources.
