a global day of action against the root causes of
climate change. That means direct actions for climate
justice in Scotland and all around the world. Some
will be planned in secret and burst into light on the
day. For those who are ready to make some noise, there
will be a massive public action. This will be big, it
will be joyous and angry, and it will confront not
collude with the leaders who are marching us merrily
towards the cliff-edge. Here are the details:
'Ceildh On the Clyde' AKA 'Boogie on the Bridge';
Friday 8th July, Glasgow. Meet 2 PM, Commerce Street (George V) Bridge.
As part of the day of action against the root causes
of climate change on Friday 8th of July, we will be
Ceildhing on the Clyde. This is in opposition to the
M74 extension, that will cut through the heart of
Glasgow and increase carbon-spewing traffic. It is
also an _expression of solidarity with people fighting
the root causes of climate change everywhere.
Whilst the G8 talk hot air about climate change, come
and resist one of the major causes, oil-driven
transport. While they fight wars for the remaining
carbon resources, come and resist Scotlands newest and
least popular motorway.
Bring Musical Instruments, things to make noise with,
banners, toys and what you expect to find.
Where are other actions likely to take place? When it
comes to Scots-based climate criminals, there's no
shortage of possibilities: the oil & gas industry,
airports and the aviation industry, fossil-
fuelled-power stations, roads, carmakers, banks that
bankroll climate changing pipelines, carbon trading
companies, oil war profiteers, the nuclear
industry...not to mention the eight hypocrite
holidaymakers themselves.
We have no quarrel with the working class people of
Scotland who work in these sectors, and who already
have dangerous workplaces, low pay and terrible
conditions to contend with. It is important to stress
this, as recent press reports have implied incorrectly
that working people should feel threatened by direct
action on the 8th.
Actions are also happening in Venezuela, New Zealand,
Iceland, Australia, the Philippines and Reading. A
global movement for climate justice is coming
together. It is saying 'no' to G8, World Bank, IMF, UN
& corporate market-based 'solutions' to the climate
crisis, and 'yes' to a post-oil, post-poverty,
post-capitalist future.
Why this day of action? Because G8 spin won't drag us
out of the downward spiral we're in. Because the G8
mantra of 'economic growth and damn the consequences'
means business as usual, which means climatic, social
and ecological meltdown. We have one decade left to
dismantle oil-fuelled power structures like the G8,
before the climate catastrophe dismantles us.
On July 8th 2005, we will flood the G8 and the world
with our demand for change and our vision of a just,
fossil-fuel free future.
