Slough Anti-Incinerator Network: A Few Small Steps....

SainSlough | 28.10.2004 14:11

A few, small, bits of good news for Slough and West London anti-incinerator citizens, so weve got to up the ante!

At a meeting of Slough Borough Council on Monday 12th October SAIN achieved our objective of securing more time for the case of the Colnbrook Incinerators to be looked at properly. This was after various inappropriate threats were made to councillors and the public alike, attempting to scare us into accepting their poisonous plans. It also came after the discovery by SAIN that one of the 'retained' lawyers (James. K. Wooley) had in fact 'not been retained'. This was corrected following pressure from SAIN and the Council should now be considering fully the advice of Mr. Wooley.

This though, was not the only recent piece of good news for anti-incinerator citizens. Campaigners are now fighting these plans accross West London under the banner of the 'West London Stop the Incinerator Campaign', and with SAIN achieved a step forward when the 'West London Waste Authority' (WLWA) voted not to immediately sign a contract with Grundon, but instead to put an advert out Europe wide seeking safer forms of waste management.

It was also agreed by the Authority that London Mayor Ken Livingstone must 'sign off' whatever contract they eventually agree to. This has supplied the campaign with another piece of good news. A recent Green Party press release explained that "Ken Livingstone responded positively to a question from the Greens on the London Assembly about using his legal powers to put a stop to the building of mass burn incinerators around London...confirming that "his understanding" was that he had the power to stop any London waste authority contracts being agreed by local authority representatives which were detrimental to his waste strategy". He also predicted that this is "a situation which will end up in court," where his legal powers over waste authorities will be tested for the first time.

With these small victories achieved we must now continue and increase the pressure we apply to the authorities. We encourage everyone to increasingly voice their opposition to the Colnbrook Incinerators (and incineration globally), please write, phone, email and fax your views to Slough Borough Council, West London Waste Authority (and its member councils), Ken Livingstone and Grundon Waste Management Ltd. AND, check out the next news story, which details our upcoming events!
