BLOCK THE BASE
text from intro at http://www.blockthebase.org.uk
We aim to close the base with the use of non-violent blockades. By doing so, we will stop traffic from entering or leaving the site (except in emergencies) and so disrupt the workings of the base. At the same time, we will hold a demonstration so that those that do not wish to take part in direct action but wish to support the event can legally demonstrate at the base. During the day we'll provide music, speakers, workshops, stalls and food around the base.
The event starts early. For tactical reasons we are not currently advertising the start time. We advise that you consider staying at the accomodation the night before as that way we can get you to Menwith Hill at the right time. We plan to continue the blockade for as long as possible and so if you are coming on the day you are free to arrive at any time. We would advise that by 11am at the latest would be best, much earlier if possible, and that the event will be starting at some point before 9am.
In blockading we achieve a number of aims. We interrupt the work of the base - work which is illegal, immoral, unaaceptable and unaccountable. We raise awareness of the workings of the base and its role in espionage, war-fighting and star wars. And we highlight the fact that this country has a number of US bases on its soil, none of which are accountable to the British people.
We will provide ideas for taking action and will oversee the event on the day to try to maintain the blockade effectively for as long as possible. However, the nature of the event is such that those taking part in the blockade will use a variety of tactics to succeed. All we ask is that all actions are completely non-violent.
