Chihuahua, January 13, 2003
Today the attorney general of the Republic [of Mexico] presented a progress report to the Chamber of Deputies' Committee on Gender Equity regarding the femicides in Juarez and Chihuahua City.
Key points included [in the Attorney General's report]:
-A plan to revise article 73 of the Constitution so that it will include these cases as crimes against humanity and violations of women's human rights [presumably this refers to UN declarations].
-Creation of a Special Office to deal with these matters.
-Creation of a specialization within the Department of Justice for disappearances of women.
Deputy Eliana Garcia reported this to us. She feels all of this is due to the work of Justicia Para Nuestras Hijas along with the efforts of many other citizen groups and organizations who have joined together to stop these crimes against women.
Sincerely,
Alma Gomez
