Injil Church service in Wamena. They were amongst 20 Papuans who had
previously been arrested in connection with flag raising events way back
in 2000. They had since been released but were taken yesterday without
warning or any information being given to families or lawyers. They have
since been covertly moved to the the main police cells in the capital of
Papua, Jayapura, and it has been discovered that there are now plans to
move the 13 to Jakarta.
It is unknown why they have been taken back but it follows soon after the
recent appointment of the new police chief to Papua, Timbul Silaen
(former E. Timor police chief during the 1999 election massacres). Indeed
when asked Silaen said that he knew nothing about these prisoners.
We are extremely concerned about the safety of these people and ask you
to telephone the local police station (Polda) where they are being held
to show that there is international attention on these prisoners (for
more info on how to phone please see
