PACA clear the fur out from the Worcester/Hereford regions

People Against Cruelty to Animals - West Midlands | 21.12.2003 00:56

Other outlets in the Hereford and Worcester areas successfully targeted in the last four months by PACA - West Mids were: Madeleine Ann, Designer Depot and Allsports in Worcester. Robes and Janet Elizabeth in Hereford.

The following article taken from the Ledbury Reporter 19th December.

Retailer stops selling fur after her picture is burnt.

Two Ledbury retailers have decided to stop selling fur following a series of animal right protests outside their High Street businesses.

The crunch came on Saturday when the photograph of one of the retailers was publicly burnt in the street and police took 30 minutes to respond to a 999 call from the concerned woman.

Both Margaret Stark, owner of In Stark Contrast, and Sarah Handley, of Sez, say the level of intimidation of staff and customers was one factor in their decision, and other was the effect the protests were having on neighbouring retailers.
Both shops now have signs in their window, informing passers-by that fur is no longer on sale there.

Mrs Handley, whose photograph was burnt, said: "I'm no longer going to sell fur. It makes me cross to say that I'm doing this, but I can't have my staff and the people of Ledbury intimidated by these people."

Margaret Stark said: "I am annoyed that we have given in, but we have been inundated with support from our customers and the public."

She said that the police had been "very slow to respond".

On one occasion, Mrs Stark walked to the police station in Worcester Road to get help, because she decided that it would be quicker than phoning for assistance.

Inspector Sue Thomas confirmed that a photograph was burnt in the street last Saturday.

She also confirmed that police took 30 minutes to respond to Mrs Handley's call for assistance, because it was not logged as "a grade one incident". As such, police had one hour to respond, and turned up in half that time.

The protesters are from the People Against Cruelty to Animals group or PACA, the same body that targets Sequani in the Bromyard Road.

Both Mrs Stark and Mrs Handley have stated that the fur they sold was a by-product only from the food industry.

Reason of post: YOU can do it too! Don't stand by and let the animal abusers (and human abusers!) get away with it. Intimidate, harass and f*ck them up like they have done to their animal and human victims!
