'About Time' - Film Festival With a Difference

Does the universe fold out forever? Is there a timeline we are all destined to follow? Does having no memory mean having no soul? The Chiswick Film Society is hosting its inaugural Film Festival on Sunday, December 14th at George IV in Chiswick, aimed at discussing these questions.

The entire day has been dedicated to the anomolies and paradoxes that unfold themselves when society tries to capture time on film called 'About Time'.

According Film Festival organiser Lawrence O'Connor, the day is aimed at making people think about time and what it means to our culture. Is it something that is innate and universal? Or does time not exist beyond our own frame of consciousness?

"I've dedicated the theme of time to the Festival because I know that it's something our society has never, and will never be able to completely define or discover. I wanted to get people thinking about the concepts and the paradoxes that are innevitably innate when we try to unravel the fabric of time and present it to an audience," Mr. O'Connor added.

The event begins at 12noon with a screening of Time Bandits, a light hearted travel through the holes in the universe and rips in the space time continuum with a band of Dwarves. Following this the Festival will show H.G. Wells' original Time Machine which has been a subject of much debate over the years due to the satirical nature of the political vices used by Wells. A great film for any students who are interested in either literature or the history of film, or those who want to see how the concept of time was perceived over a hundred years ago.

As dusk settles there will be a screening of a 1927 film entitled Shooting Stars beginning at 5pm which simply cannot be missed. Very rarely is an original 16mm film shown at a festival and with the live piano accompanying the film, you will most definitely feel like you've stepped into a time warp.

At night the action really starts with a screening of the amazing Guy Pierce suffering from retrograde amnesia in Memento. This film has generated a cult following raising not only psychological and neurological issues, but ethical ones as well. Whether you've seen it before or you're a first time viewer, this film simply cannot be missed.

The final screening beginning at 9pm is the critically acclaimed Irreversible, a film that has won the respect of film critics and festival reviewers right throughout the world. The film begins with the ending credits and runs sequentially from finish to start. This is definitely a film all movie goers will want to see again.

History and Psychology student Dominique Costello said that she can't wait for the festival and has already put the whole day aside just for the event.

‘It’s great to have a day of movie screenings, and I love the concept of time travel and time in general', Miss Costello said. ‘Plus, It’s in a pub, so you can really make it a whole day, or evening with friends’ she added.

The program for the festival is as follows:

12:00 Noon - Time Bandits (Bring the kids)
2:30pm - Time Machine (Original Version)
5:00pm - Shooting Stars
6:45pm - Memento
9:00pm - Irreversible

Plus a few surprise screenings.

Feel free to bring a pillow or a cushion and a sleeping bag and spend the whole day.

Tickets cost £4.00 adult/£2.50 concession, per movie. Plus a £1.00 day membership fee. Discounts apply to multiple and group viewings. For more information on the Festival or about the Chiswick Film Society, phone 07792 401 776 and support London film before time goes by without you.
