Big manifestation took place last week in the city of Trikala, right in the heart of Thessalian fields, the biggest crop giving area in Greece demonstrating against the E.U.’ approval tactics opening the path of GMO cultivation.
The event got organized from around 40 different portions having to do with agriculture like local AgroUnions, farmers of Organic and Natural agriculture, scientists and representatives of other groups like Greek Green party members, Greenpeace etc.
Choice was not accidental, as Thessaly dominates the greatest portion of Greece’s agricultural production in various plantations and has a long history of long- hard-struggle manifestations and strikes against governmental policy. The demonstrations gesture was to declare Thessaly’s farmers will of characterising it GMO-free zone, following the example of similar areas in Britain and Austria
An anti-GMO movement is yet growing rapidly in land. Last research results showed that the 93% of Greeks do not want GMO-cultivation in their land nor GMO products in their plate. Many presentations concerning the future of agriculture and food production have been already made in major cities by eco-organisations, especially after the E.U. last decisions. Nevertheless, there’s have not been a formal governmental placement condemning GMO, when prime ministers early statements for moving towards in biotechnology fields rather gives an obscured idea of true political intentions.
