Secret Society - Secret Cabinet Committees - VHS (PAL) - 1x30min. episode - BBC - 1986
Never broadcast episode from this controversial BBC Documentary series by reporter Duncan Campbell.
The episode about secret cabinet committees features author Peter Hennesey, whistleblower Clive Ponting and MP Clement Freud.
When the programme was being made BBC Scotland was raided by special branch police and the production office taken away in transit vans.
In this freedom of information tour de force Campbell examines the secret decision to buy U.S. Trident nuclear submarines and exposes a cabinet level dirty tricks campaign against CND general secretary Bruce Kent amongst other things.
Margaret Thatcher, James Callaghan, the British Atlantic Committee, The Coalition for Peace Through Security and the cabinet secretary come in for sharp, scathing criticism.
Support for this programme was one of the key reasons BBC Director General, Alasdair Milne, was sacked by the BBC board of governors in 1986.
In this programme Campbell does what the BBC used to do best, investigate corrupt politicians and civil servants who are misusing public trust and public money at the highest levels of so-called democratic government.
The fact that Campbell, now one of the editors of the New Statesman, pulls no punches makes this one of the best British television documentaries ever made.
The public have never before been allowed to see this programme about the inner workings of the British cabinet system they pay for.
As Peter Hennesy describes it "you won't find these secret committees in the text books on British government and constitution".
