ANGUISH shows on the faces of US troops yesterday as their new commander tells them their stay in Iraq is to be extended.
The despair was clear as it emerged that morale amongst US forces is so low that troops are writing letters to politicians, begging to be sent home.
One wrote: "Most soldiers would empty their bank accounts just for a plane ticket home."
The state of the army's morale was revealed after reports yesterday that two more US soldiers have been killed and four wounded in Iraq during a spate of guerrilla attacks which also left at least two Iraqis dead.
It brings to 29 the number of US soldiers killed in action in Iraq since President Bush declared major combat over on May 1.
