Riots mark end of G8 summit
Violence raged on the streets of the Swiss city for a third night as world leaders left the nearby town of Evian in France.
Heavily armed Swiss police used teargas, rubber pellets and water cannons to disperse the demonstrators who staged a sit-in after refusing to be searched by police as they entered the city.

Editorial: Protests at G-8 Summit
Yet again, a G-8 summit has been in the news not because of what the politicians attending have done but because of violent protests by anti-capitalist demonstrators. Ever since the WTO fiasco in Seattle in 1999, it seems that no major international economic gathering is without a group of anarchic, anti-capitalist protesters.

Riot squads and demonstrators clash at G8
Riot squads and anti-G8 demonstrators clashed for a second night in central Geneva on Monday night.
The battle ended another day of mainly peaceful protests during which city authorities began a massive clear-up operation after Sunday night's violent demonstrations, and pressure grew for France to compensate the Swiss for damage running into millions of dollars

As industrialized country leaders continue to meet in Evian, France, Monday, Switzerland is still reeling from the violence of anti G-8 demonstrations.

Clouds obscure the point of the summit
"Is your journey really necessary?" asked energy-saving campaign posters half a century ago. Today it is a question that should be put to the participants at Group of Eight summits. This week's gathering in Evian has highlighted, better than ever before, the obtrusively redundant nature of the media extravaganzas that go by the innocuous name of G8 meetings.

EVIAN, France (Reuters) - Violent protests against a Group of Eight summit have flared up again as the main industrial powers wound
down their three-day meeting following the departure of U.S. President George W. Bush.
Several thousand demonstrators blocked Geneva's main bridge over the Rhone river on Tuesday and clashed with police for the third night
running, despite the fact most anti-G8 activists had left the area after large weekend protests. Two dozen were arrested.

Swiss street battles as anarchists with time on their hands move in.
Summit diary by Philip Delves Broughton
Forget the agonised Bush-Chirac-Blair triangle. The real anti-French feeling at the G8 summit came from the Swiss. By staging the summit on the banks of Lake Leman, President Jacques Chirac displaced scores of hooligan anarchists on to the pristine streets of Lausanne and Geneva.

Anarchists' violence mars peaceful protests
The well-meaning young man in smart clothes shouted angrily at the hooded French anarchists spray-painting "smash capitalism" on someone's garage door.
The same gang had just vandalised a petrol station a little further down the street. (If you are going to smash capitalism, why not start with someone's small business?) "We are here to protest peacefully. Why do you do this?" the courageous young man demanded.
