Upcoming Noborder Camps

ionnek/louisa | 28.06.2003 11:51 | Migration

Despite the desperate situation at the borders of fortress Europe, the 2003 noborder summer is in full swing. Noborder demos took place in Geneva during the evian G8 summit [Imc Uk feature] and at the EU summit in Thessaloniki.
The noborder camp in Timisoara (Romania) ended with a cheerful demo. From July 2, a conference and a bordercamp in Krynki will start in Poland, followed by Puglia (Italy) from 21-27 July, and Cologne (Germany) starting on 31 July.
Mobile media units like the noborderlab of the Publixtheatrecaravan are connecting the events. See noborder.org for details.

During the mid 80's, Europe began to show its border regime and legislation. In 1990 the 'Schengen' convention was adopted and common standards on migration policy were established for all member states.

All countries within the European Union, except the UK and Ireland signed the agreement. From this point on, asylum seekers from outside the EU could only request asylum from within the country they eventually reached. This made it impossible for immigrants to freely choose their resident country (in conformity with, for example, the language they knew or the residence of their family or friends). As the years passed by, further hurdles were placed in the way of the free movement of people. Activists campaigning against racism and for the free movement of people realised that acting only within the frame of the nation-state could no longer be effective as laws were getting stricter on both european and international levels. Therefore a wide range of groups, initiatives and individuals began to build up the no-border-network.

Organised by different groups of the no-border-network, heavily guarded outer borders have become a target for direct action in a chain of no-border-camps, conferences and anti-summit-mobilisations taking place all over Europe between the 15th of May and the 10th of August 2003. These events will, amongst other issues, address the threats of globalisation and modernisation of the border regime (read more), the relationship between migration and work, and the relationship between freedom of movement and freedom of information. News about these events and links of interest can be found on http://noborder.org

Two groups, the 'publix-theater-caravan' and the 'temporary association everyone is an expert', are preparing bus tours that aim to provide a means of direct connection and communication between the various projects. (Report on the start of the "Publix-theatre-caravan")

UPCOMING CAMPS AND MEETINGS:

Conferences: An action day in Warsaw and a no-border-camp in Krynki are taking place from the 26 June-5th July in Poland. They include an anti-border conference, 26-29th June, an international anarchist meeting, 27-30th June and a no-border-camp at the border to Belaurus 2nd-5thJuly (www.noborder.org/camps/03).

21st-27th July in Italy: No-border-camp near Puglia-Salento. There will be workshops and actions opposing the border-regime in the Mediterranean Sea, against detention-camps and highlighting the working conditions of migrants within the agricultural sector.

31st July-10th August in Germany: Conference and no-border-camp in Cologne (see also www.noborder.org/camps/03)

31st July-3rd of August: "Out of Control Conference"

3rd-10th August: Actions against I.O.M, A.Z.R. (-database) and at the deportation airport in Dusseldorf.

PREVIOUS EVENTS :

On 6th June, as part of the protests against the G8 meeting in Geneva, a live streamed "talk-show" took place, which discussed the relationship between migration-regime and intellectual property-regime, the freedom of movement and freedom of information. This info-event also served as the mobilisation the next day, when around 3000 people participated within the demonstration against I.O.M, W.T.O. and W.I.P.O. in Geneva. (read more)

From the 9-15th June, a no-border-camp took place in Timisiora, Romania in the triangle to Hungary and Yugoslavia . (see pictures) It included concerts, workshops and actions to the theme of sweatshops, the situation in Romania - especially for Romany people, east-west-networks, actions, and global migration management.Ê The Camp ended with a demonstration in Timisoara under the slogans "freedom of movement // globalisation now // freedom of information"

On the 28th of June more than 5000 people demonstrated against the EU's asylum and migration policies outside the EU council meeting in Thessaloniki (see report on indymedia) where the 15 Member States - in a rare occasion of not jumping on any plan that further erodes the right of asylum in Europe - refused to support the UK's initative to set up 'processing centres' for UK bound refugees outside of the European Union.
