Around 200 students and local peace activists took to the streets of Canterbury last night in opposition to war in Iraq, and building on the successful protest at Blair's visit to the city last month. Converging outside the City Library at 6pm, they marched from here to the West Gate
towers, meeting members of Kent CND, where police were surprised as the demonstrators marched straight on to the road, continuing to a busy roundabout on the ring road where demonstrators occupied the road for around
20 minutes, using their 'weapon of mass democracy'; stopping a large amount of traffic leaving the city. Following this, the march continued to the cathedral where a noisy protest was held outside the entrance. Police brutality and scuffles were in evidence, with police cameras being used and reports of one woman being stuck at by a police officer. The demonstration was very noisy, passionate and powerful, and protestors vowed that this
'would only be the start' of a strong campaign of mass protest and civil
disobedience.
