Cardiff Activists mark Human Rights Day, Dec 10th.
Cardiff activists braved the sub-zero, distinctly non-Amazonian temperatures on International Human Rights day to carry a coffin symbolising the death of democracy and of respect for human rights in Colombia. The coffin bore the names of the 148 trade unionists assassinated so far to November this year, and was carried through Cardiff's principal pedestrian thoroughfare. Flyers were distributed to frozen shoppers to denounce the march towards fascism in this beleaguered country, where 40,000 took to the streets of Bogota on the same day, yet the national press did not even report the demonstration. Needless to say, the Colombian demonstration was met with heavy-handed police repression, and already reports are being heard of state repression against international NGO's - Colombia is sliding towards a military dictatorship, where opposition is silenced by paramilitary/army death squads, and the country's oil resources are sucked out by British and US companies. All, of course, under the watchful & approving eye of Uncle Sam, who pays for it. You liked Vietnam? You'll love Colombia...
