COMEDIAN AND EURO MP TO JOIN HUNDREDS RISKING ARREST AT ANTI-WAR DIE-IN MONDAY
UK comedian Mark Thomas and Green Party Euro MP Caroline Lucas will join hundreds of anti war protestors in risking arrest in Whitehall at 10.30 am on Monday 2 December at an anti-war 'die-in' protest described as 'War Zone Whitehall'.
The “Die In” represents a significant step up in the resistance to the proposed war against Iraq, the first occasion on which hundreds of people will risk arrest at a single anti war event.
Protesters wearing bandages and bloody clothes will simulate the consequences for civilians of a US-led invasion ofIraq. They will lie down in the road, blocking Whitehall and risking arrest for highway obstruction.
Voices UK press spokesman Richard Byrne said, “Thousands of people all over the UK have signed a rapidly growing pledge (1) to engage in non-violent civil disobedience against this war. Warzone Whitehall will give the Government a small taste of the resistance to come if they continue to support this obscene war.”
On 12 November 2002, the global health organisation Medact, the UK
affiliate of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War -
winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985 - issued a report estimating the
possible death toll in Iraq during and in the immediate aftermath of a war
as between 48,000 and 260,000. If nuclear weapons are used, the death toll
could rise to 3,900,000. The majority of deaths would be civilians.
