The staff at Prince Charles' country estate operates in an environment where racist jokes are still tolerated.
From staff and wire reports
Posted Dec. 13, 2001 -- The staff at Prince Charles' country estate operates in an environment where racist jokes are still tolerated, a former personal secretary to the heir to the throne told an employment tribunal last week.
Elizabeth Burgess, who is Black, is claiming damages from the prince, saying she suffered racial discrimination while employed at Highgrove in Gloucestershire, England. Burgess, 39, also claims breach of contract and unfair dismissal.
"They wanted a White face at Highgrove and I was not that face," Burgess told the tribunal. The prince's staff was from "the old school ... they have not really taken to Black people."
Burgess made no allegations that Prince Charles knew about her complaints at the time or was involved in any way. His lawyers deny the allegations.
Burgess said she was called a "nigger" by Prince Charles' valet, Michael Fawcett. Burgess said when she tried to complain to Highgrove's personnel officer she was told there was no point because Fawcett is a favorite of the prince.
"There were always Black jokes and names going round -- because it is the royal family it is still very protected. It has its own rules and regulations," she said.
Burgess resigned her post in March after 10 years, following a dispute about her hours. She says she had no option but to resign.

Palace panic with new scandal at every turn
By RICHARD KAY and MICHAEL SEAMARK in London

THE crisis at the heart of the Royal Family intensified yesterday as one of Prince Charles's closest aides broke his silence to deny raping another male servant.
The senior Palace official, who chose to remain anonymous, issued a detailed rebuttal of the "rape tape" allegations made by ex-valet George Smith.
In a statement released by his lawyers, he described Mr Smith as an "unreliable alcoholic" whose story differed "substantially and significantly" from what he told police last year.
In other developments damaging to the Royals yesterday, British MPs called for an investigation of claims that Prince Charles's personal assistant Michael Fawcett acted as a "fence, selling official gifts on his behalf".
Mr Fawcett is said to have kept between 10 and 20 per cent of the money gained.

If I have made a false accusation I shall naturally withdraw and apologise. However I will not be satisfied with a right royal whitewash.Peat bog fires endanger the very shared air we all breathe. The closest examination must now be made of the Queens box and when did the Royal stop buggering the butler? Enquiring minds want to know.
