A Bristolian's view of Blair's Dossier

A Bristolian's view of Blair's Dossier

So the government have published the infamous dossier and with the overwhelming pile of evidence it has within its pages, we're urged to stay stead-fast in our course towards war. Well, I've read the dossier and I'm still more afraid of Bush than I am of Saddam.

So Iraq has used weapons of mass destruction on it's own people. Scary. So have we. So has the USA.

He tortures Kurdish people. Frightening. So do our allies.

So his Gestapo use electric shocks to torture dissidents. So do our allies.

OK, so he imprisons people without trial. So do we and so does the USA. So do our allies. Very scary.

You can't fight a war on terror when you sponsor terrorism yourself. You can't can fight for democracy when your allies are dictators.

And even if British blood is spilt today to stop Saddam, are we not grooming the next Saddam to take his place? Take Musharaf for example. like Saddam, he's a dictator. Like Saddam he represses his own population and like Saddam he sponsors terrorism. Unlike Saddam, he has nukes. The difference? He's our ally. Like Saddam was in the 80s.

And so the wheel turns. Bin Laden, then a CIA agent now a terrorist. Noriega, then a CIA agent, now a felon. Saddam, then a strategic ally, now a Hitler. And so the wheel turns.

If they really cared about democracy they'd tell the truth. The truth is that all of them, from Blair to Bush, from Saddam to Musharraf have more in common with each other than they do with us. They all love power and they are all prepared to manipulate and kill to keep it.

So now we're between a rock (going to war against a dictator) and a hard-place (leaving the dictator in power) and what no politician want to ask is – how did we get into this mess in the first place? To secure cheap oil we supported and armed a dictator and to ensure cheap oil we’re about to go to war with the same dictator.

Who’s the next dictator we’ll be at war with? Take your pick as, for example, we’re currently arming and supporting the dictators of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.

Recent examples of their Saddam-like behaviour include; “Thousands have been arrested in Uzbekistan by the National Security Service simply because they questioned government policies…” or “In Kyrgyzstan, President Akayev had his most popular rivals kept off the ballot in recent elections…”.

Or the future Saddam could come from South American (like Noriega!) as there’s a serious danger of an emerging dictatorship amongst our allies there as well as an ongoing US based training camp for the Bin Laden’s of the future.

When will we tire of our so-called-leaders game playing and realise that security comes in conjunction with the freedom of others, where ever they live in the world and not either at their expense or at the bottom of a barrel of oil.

Message ends.
