The history of the Basque Country is rooted in Europe’s origins, with a language so ancient that no one has been able to trace its nascence. The Basque language, Euskera, is older than any Indo-European or Germanic languages. Basque tradition and culture should be consider a treasure by Europe, because it’s among the oldest living European cultural heritage. Compared to the Basque Country Spain is a new born child.

Unfortunately, Spain is behaving like America towards its native indians, who were faced with americanisation (reserves) or extinction. Do we, Europeans, want to repeat american errors?. Do we want a disneyland Basque Country, or a living one?.

The Basque Country inhabitants are the only people entitled to look after their own interests if we are to preserve this unique European cultural heritage, but Spain is failing to allow the Basque people to decide their own future. Basque radios, newspapers, magazines, political parties and many young peoples organisations have been made illegal with the excuse of supporting terrorism in recent times. The Basque language is currently persecuted in Navarre, and this weekend the right of peaceful protest in the Basque Country has been suppressed.

The future of Euskal Herria is the future of Europe.
