Appeal against the extradition of Italian activists refugees in France

Since 1985, following French President François Mitterrand, France accepted
that those Italian revolutionary activists who "have broken with the
terrible machine of terrorism", could not be extradited and could live in
France. It has been recognized, implicitly, that the social conflict
developed during the years 1970s and 1980s in Italy was of political nature.

This commitment has been abruptly ended with the decision of the government
Raffarin to arrest Professor Paolo Persechetti in order to deliver him to
the police of a country in which the far right is in power.

This first break of a commitment taken is unworthy of a country that saw the
birth of the bill of human right, and risks of being the prelude of other
extraditions. Among the people targeted, there is our friend the writer
Cesare Battisti. As for all his comrades, we demand that he can continue to
live and work in France.

Appel contre l'extradition des anciens militants italiens

Depuis 1985, par la voix du président de la République François Mitterrand,
la France a accepté que les militants révolutionnaires italiens " ayant
rompu avec la machine infernale du terrorisme " ne soient pas extradés et
puissent vivre sur son sol. Il était ainsi reconnu, implicitement, que l'
affrontement social qui avait eu lieu dans les années 70 et 80, en Italie,
était de nature politique.

Ce respect de la parole donnée vient d'être brusquement bafoué par la
décision du gouvernement Raffarin d'arrêter le professeur Paolo Persechetti
pour le livrer à la police d'un pays où l'extrême droite est associée au
pouvoir.

Ce premier reniement, indigne d'un pays où naquit la charte des droits de l'
homme, risque d'être le prélude à d'autres extraditions. Parmi les personnes
visées, figure notre ami, l'écrivain Cesare Battisti. Comme pour tous ses
camarades, nous exigeons qu'il puisse continuer à vivre et à travailler en
France.
