The development of the Simunye news service will be crucial
as the Swaziland democracy movement meets some highly
important challenges this year: the publication of the
country's new constitution and the trial of People's United
Democracy Movement (Pudemo) leader Mario Masuku.
Swaziland is also in the grip of a food and AIDS crisis,
which is virtually being ignored by the international
community. We need to attract international attention to
these problems in order to develop solutions and force the
government to adopt a more practical approach by better
management of its resources.
The news service will expand rapidly in coming weeks as we
upload feature articles and update readers on the
activities of the Swaziland democracy movement. SSC is also
currently helping Pudemo's youth wing, the Swaziland Youth
Congress (Swayoco), to develop its own website. This is
part of our commitment to help give the Swaziland
opposition a voice beyond southern Africa.
The creation of the news service will form part of the
OneWorld network ( http://www.oneworld.net), which provides
a country-specific news service linked to campaigns like
ours. Our membership of OneWorld will enable us to
publicise issues in Swaziland to a wider audience and
network with international non-governmental organisations
and campaigning groups.
Hopefully, Simunye will help attract attention to Swaziland
within the mainstream press as well as Western campaigning groups.
