Genoa: The most bloody and brutal G8 summit ever, One year on.

Marcus Covell | 17.07.2002 12:48

It is expected by the mother of Carlo that over 40,000 people will converge on Genoa for the memorial rally for Carlo Giuliani on July 20th 2002....

It is one year on when Carlo aged 23, was shot dead by the Italian police during the G8 Summit of last year. He has become an icon of the ‘movement’ and he will be remembered for what his death represents in terms of the power of the state and of the struggle against Globalisation and western capitalism.

It is expected that there will be mass protests outside many embassies worldwide but it is Genoa where he will be remembered the most. Genoa is still coming to terms with the death of the young protester and with what happened in plazza Alimonda will be discussed alongside the Diaz raid and the reasons why Genoa was turned into a war zone for several days.

At this moment in time, much of the truth of what happened in Genoa has yet to come out as injured protesters continue to bring charges and accounts of torture and abuse by the Italian police. Also, there is much anger against the police. It is hoped by Heidi, Carlo’s mother that the demonstration will be peaceful and she has asked the police to stand well back from the rally to avoid confrontation. What will happen though is many people will be chanting, “ ASSASINI!” at the Police.

For Heidi Giuliani, the movement has become her life. Her struggle is the movement encapsulated. I spoke with her yesterday at length during a very emotional personal interview at the Diaz raid meeting that was arranged by Peace link.

She is very bitter still with the police and their investigation. She said, “ it is like murderers investigating themselves. Justice will never be done when it comes to the death of my son.”

Carlo father is still grief stricken and very angry. At the Diaz meeting, he denounced the police union who were present, trying to say sorry. The feeling was shared by many that the police are very worried by the domestic and international image and their attempts, which were viewed to explain their actions during G8, as falling well short of what was required to remove fascist politicalisation within the Italian police.

Amnesty International are still investigating the G8 Summit at length. Accounts and evidence of the brutality are continually coming in a year after the summit and have called for an international independent commission to fully investigate the protests. Furthermore, Amnesty International restated the initial findings of which the implications are still being studied by the Italian left. This morning, several TV channels and newspapers are beginning to report on the anniversary of Carlo’s death, the Diaz raid and the street battles that took place. More Importantly, Italy should be and is worried of its international image, one year on from the bloody G8 summit.

One very strong demand of the victims of the Diaz is that Gianfranco Fini, deputy prime minister and leader of the National Alliance should be held account for his actions During the G8 and for ordering the Diaz raid where 93 victims were arrested and beaten. Of those, 61 were hospitalized, including myself as an indymedia Journalist. It is expected that an announcement will be made in future concerning this issue and the fact that Fini may face European Human Rights charges.

This indymedia reporter can clarify that the torture that happened at Bolzaneto Detention camp is very complicated and will still take some more time to unravel the truth of what happened. Chief prosecutor Meloni will be making statements on his findings into the events of Bolzaneto detention camp where four British and one Irish were urinated upon and tortured for days with sleep deprivation, random beatings and fascist propaganda being shouted at them all the time.

Vittorio Angeletto, Leader of the GSF, cut short a meeting in southern italy to travel to Genoa to condemn the actions of the police and Berlusconi. Attending last week’s living Marxism2002, he said, “I want to be with Heidi and the victims of the summit on their anniversary of Genoa”

Some of the Diaz victims, in particular have been invited to Rome to appear in front of Italian MP’s to present further evidence to the Rome Parliament.

More reports will follow in the ensuring days…..
