GBG 2001 Justice for Per Gunnarsson

SAC - Sweden's Workers Central Organisation | 17.05.2002 11:35

Another of a possible 102 trials against activists in the aftermath of the EU top meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden in June of 2001.

Justice for Per Gunnarsson

On the 23rd of May 2002, our union comrade Per Gunnarsson, of
Lund’s Local Federation of Sweden's Workers Central Organisation
(LS av SAC) is to be put on trial. Per was an SAC functionary at the
Hivtfeldtska School while police besieged it during the EU top meeting
In Gotherburg in June of 2001.

The police claim that Per moved a number of cobblestones and is
Therefore charged with premeditation of assault.

Per claims he is innocent. He was at the school to assist comrades
in finding places to sleep, take care of administrative duties and
inform people of SAC's programme of events.

As soon as Per understood that Hvidfeldtska was under siege, he
called SAC’s temporary headquarters in Gothenburg in order to see
what the recommended course of action for him to take was. A
decision was made that Per should remain at the school in order to,
amongst other things, watch over SAC's sound system that was in
a truck parked in the school's courtyard.

Per, as well as SAC's other functionaries present at the school, did
their utmost to insure that people felt secure and remained calm -
despite the police siege. SAC is thankful for their efforts as they
all did an incredible job under extreme duress.

SAC stands fast in the claim that the criminal charges against Per are
fabricated and that he should be found innocent from all charges, if
the charges aren’t all together dropped. SAC was provided the Hvidfeldtska
facilities for an international meeting and union federation meetings.
SAC expected up to 500 members and union comrades from across
Europe to stay there.

Based upon previous sentences from the incidents surrounding the EU
top meeting in Gothenburg, Per risks receiving a prison sentence of up to
2,5 years for his accused crime.

However, there is some hope as a recent decision from Sweden's High
Court on the incidents surrounding Hvidfeldtska, confirms that the police
did indeed put the school under siege and those incidents that did happen
were a direct response to this police action.

SAC requests that you send a letter of support and solidarity to Per Gunnarsson:
