Antifascist action in Athens, Greece, 29/4/2002

Xrysi Aygi is the principal neo-fascist group in Greece. Even though their public appeal and approval is very low, their leader presents an extreme-right-wing one-man's-cheap-politics show on one of the minor TV stations of the capital city of Athens, while their attacks to occupated buildings and immigrants have multiplied this year. The recent "success" of the French extreme-right Le Pen made them schedule a gathering in support of Le Pen, in the Pedion Areos for last afternoon's 19:00 o'clock.
The reaction of the extreme left was to organize a counter-demonstration whose intent was to cancel the fascists' gathering in Mouseio at 17:00'.
We arrived at around 17:15' and more than a hundred people were present. People kept coming and until 18:00' we were around five-hundred.
Then a group of anarchists announced that whoever wanted to sit there and do nothing but shout and march would but do so, while whoever asked for something more should come and act against the fascists. The depart of about 50-60 persons heading for the fascists' bureaus was imminent. There was a fierce attack with stones and molotov cocktails. The fascists (no more than 10-20) answered back and were quickly aided by the police who started using tear gas.
The anti-fascists retreated to Mouseio (the original meeting point) and a march to Pedion Areos started, in order to arrive there before the neo-nazis. The arrival there was without any incident, even though a bunch of riot-police arrived shortly and undercover police was looming the surrounding area.
The demo remained at the Pedion Areos until 20:00' (minor incidents with beating of two fascist-looking guys and an other who proved to be undercover policeman happened). The fascists didn't dare to come -their leader gave a ...brave speech at their offices instead.
Then all the people left marching together for the Exarcheia square. A disaggrement burst out when a rumour of the nazis coming was heard at the moment of the march and the anarchists -more than half of the people- wanted to stay and face them. The alarm proved to be false and all the people marched towards Exarcheia with the police pigs following.
Since Exarcheia has been a traditional anarchist stronghold new riots started with molotov cocktails and stones against the cops. They started close-chasing the demonstrators who broke to small groups, retreating. The cops even chased people in front of the "Steki Metanaston" (something like a Social Centre for Immigrants), where they extensively used tear gas and sound-flash grenades, while hitting and overturning tables of a nearby cafe. The chase continued in the sidestreets, while the cops remained in the area till the late of the night.
There were no arrests reported.
