Defend Council Housing: latest news
internationalist | 13.03.2002 17:21
On 9 February over two hundred delegates representing eighty-five organisations (mainly tenants groups) attended the DCH National Conference. Another fifty Birmingham tenants attended a workshop during the conference to prepare for their ballot starting next week. We hope to produce a report covering the plenary and workshop sessions.
INVESTMENT NOT TIED TO TRANSFER
It will be news to many that Stephen Byers gave a clear response to a Commons Select Committee on 16 January. Asked to clarify whether investment to bring all homes up to the government's decency threshhold by 2010 was guaranteed to tenants who stayed with the council he said, "It is a commitment that will be met irrespective of any decisions which are taken by tenants". So there is an alternative to transfer, PFI or ALMOs. Spread this news; the government aren't exactly publicising it!
BALLOTS IN BIRMINGHAM, GLASGOW, BRADFORD, TOWER HAMLETS
In the coming weeks we need to back the 'Vote No' campaigns where ballots are taking place. If you can help, get in touch. Whilst councils spend our rents paying consultants to organise their campaigns we have to rely on tenants and trade unionists to give up a few hours here and there.
DCH NATIONAL COMMITTEE
DCH is holding its next National Committee in Birmingham on 23 March. We are also asking people to help Birmingham DCH with their campaign bus and local stalls. Meet 11.00am outside Odeon, Lime St (down from rail station). The National Committee meeting is 3.00pm-5.00pm at United Services Club, Gough St, Birmingham (near centre).
LOBBY MPs
On 16 April we are organising a briefing for MPs. On the day before the budget we are asking each area to organise a representative delegation to contact their MP and ask them to meet you in Parliament and attend the briefing. Speakers include leading tenants, trade unionists, MPs, Councillors and academics putting the 'Case for Council Housing'.
