A group of 75 demonstrators from Ireland will be joined by groups from around
England to demonstrate at Sellafield.
Irish Group Plan to Shut Down Sellafield
Irish demonstrators from Limerick, Galway, Clare, Cork , Dublin and Belfast will
be in Sellafield on Thursday 20th December in order to stop the new MOX plant
from opening. The demonstrators plan to blockade the plant using non-violent
direct action. Some local UK groups will also be joining the action.
The group will also be joined by
JOHN GORMLEY T.D., The Green Party
Senator FERGUS O’DOWD, Fine Gael
The MOX plant will create new nuclear fuel from wasted foreign plutonium and
depleted uranium. Campaigners say the plant is unnecessary, not economically
viable, and could make it easier for terrorists to obtain nuclear materials. The
Irish Government's and Greenpeace/Friends of the Earth's court cases have failed
to stop the plant from opening. So the ‘Shut Down Sellafield’ campaign will
attempt a direct action to physically halt work beginning.
The group will also be raising awareness among the Sellafield employees and
local people of Cumbria that closing Sellafield need not necessarily mean losing
jobs. Literature will be distributed to point out the possible benefits for the
people of Cumbria if the monies spent on Sellafield (£1.8 Billion on THORP 1994,
£470 million on MOX) were spent on industries such as farming, tourism, and
alternative technologies.
The groups will leave Ireland on a number of buses on Wednesday. They will spend
time beforehand talking to the people of Cumbria and the workers at the plant.
Some groups will also do street theatre and other colourful actions by the
blockade.
