The Center held the Israeli government responsible for any harm that might happen to the child, denouncing the dreadful detention conditions of Palestinian child detainees. It also emphasized their deprivation of basic rights, such as the right to education.
The Center’s General Director, Mr. Ziad Al-Hammouri, stressed that Ahmad was detained for stone throwing and that the Center had urged the Court for his immediate release due to his severe illness. The Court however refused, insisting that the child be held until he is placed on trial.
Ahmad’s grandmother, Im Ishaq, who raised Ahmad, expressed her worry to the Palestine Media Center (PMC), “Ahmad was tortured and brutally beaten in his cell, which further deteriorated his health. He now suffers severe bronchitis and passes out occasionally due to difficulty in breathing. When I visited him last week, I did not recognize him. He raised his hand in the air for me to see him. It broke my heart to see him in such a terrible state.”
The Center called upon the United Nations Secretary General, the representatives to the Palestine National Authority (PNA), and the Consuls in Jerusalem to intervene and save the child’s life.
Moreover, General Director of the Treatment and Rehabilitation Center for Victims of Torture (TRC), Dr. Mahmoud Sahwil stated in a press release yesterday that the Israeli violent and repressive measures against the Palestinian People is creating a culture of violence within the Israeli law enforcement agency.
Dr. Sahwil stressed that Israeli hostility has affected the entire Palestinian population, both directly and indirectly, through collective killings, assassinations, house demolitions, land confiscation, tight closure, and other oppressive measures.
“The Israeli aggression has had a severe psychological impact on the Palestinian People. Children, in particular, have been acutely affected, as the majority show signs of worry, anxiety, and fear”, Dr. Sahwil emphasized.
