Downing Street 11th unhappy anniversary “Blow Out” planned by anti sanctions groups
Campaigners bearing 1000 balloons from Voices in the Wilderness UK (1), Act Together (2) and Women in Black (3) will float down Whitehall this Sunday August 5th calling for the economic sanctions on Iraq to be lifted immediately, eleven years exactly after they were imposed. The campaigners will gather at 1 p.m. at Temple Place, Embankment and march to Downing Street bearing balloons with the slogans “Re inflate the Iraqi economy” “Lift the sanctions on Iraq” and “Sanctions kill”
Richard Byrne, a vet from east London who visited Iraq with Voices in January said, “In March 1999, a humanitarian panel set up by the UN Security Council concluded that ‘The humanitarian situation in Iraq will continue to be a dire one in the absence of a sustained revival in the Iraqi economy.’(2) That cannot happen while economic sanctions remain in place. By the UN’s own assessment sanctions condemn ordinary Iraqi people to suffer. Iraq needs its economy to re inflate. That can only happen if the UN stops running Iraq like a giant refugee camp. Iraq’s oil revenues must be allowed into its internal economy, Iraq must be allowed foreign credits and loans to rebuild its infrastructure.”
“Ordinary Iraqis need a wage which means something. They need the purchasing power to buy the things all families need. After eleven years of sanctions we must end what Save the Children Fund described as a ‘silent war on Iraq’s children’ (3)”
The march will be followed by a 72 hour, round the clock fast opposite Downing Street.
