GREENS: LAW DICTATES VOLUNTARY VACCINATION
The Government's contiguous culling policy is contrary to a European
Directive says Green Party's Hugo Charlton, a barrister specialising in
Public Law Administration. There is therefore no legal basis for enforcing
a contiguous cull against the wishes of the farmer concerned. This leaves
the Labour Government with two options: either persist to with its present
policy, and run up an even larger bill for future damages claims against it,
or use vaccination in the case of farmers who do not voluntarily accept the
cull.
Dr Richard Lawson, the Green Party's Foot & Mouth campaign co-ordinator,
comments, "It is irrational that Nick Brown refused to impose vaccination
against the wishes of farmers, and yet is prepared illegally to enforce a
slaughter against their wishes. The Green Party has an offer of 10,000 free
vaccines and tests, but we cannot even get an answer to our requests to Nick
Brown and his officials, let alone an acceptance.
Slaughter poses a major public health risk, including further cases of vCJD
in 20 years, and a majority of the electorate finds the slaughter policy
repugnant. Yet because the MAFF policy is accepted uncritically by the
three main parties, Foot and Mouth has not figured in the election campaign.
The system that allows this to happen cannot be described as a true
democracy."
