===========================
A stampede of commercial candidates using the election to advertise brands on the hustings is feared after a 26-year-old TV holiday programme presenter announced a bid for a seat under the banner of failed car-maker Daewoo.
Liz Fraser, a Cambridge graduate, is standing as the "That'll be the Daewoo Party" candidate against the Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott in his Hull East constituency, and the recently created Electoral Commission confirmed that it was not against the rules for others to exploit commercial brand names by getting them on the ballot papers.
The development has outraged Labour and Tory MPs including Tim Loughton, the Conservative MP for Worthing East and Shoreham. The Korean-based Daewoo International last week made 600 workers redundant at their base in his constituency.
Voters are used to zany fringe candidates, such as the late Screaming Lord Sutch, founder of the Monster Raving Loony Party. In fact, they have earned a place in history, having embarrassed David Owen so much in one by-election that he decided to kill off the SDP.
Alison Moran, the Daewoo head of communications, said they had chosen to fight Mr Prescott's constituency as a protest about the Government's attitude to motorists.
Mr Loughton said that unless the rules were changed there could be a I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Party candidate or a Chicken Tonight Party candidate.
