Legalising of Cannabis gains momentum
This message was confirmed by Commander Brian Paddick of the Met Police who announced on 27th March 2001 a change in policing priorities for Lambeth. Instead of arresting and convicting people, officers will be issuing a formal warning and then seizing the Cannibis for later disposal, as he pointed out " We believe this policy will allow my officers to spend more time on the streets of the borough tackling those selling crack and all crime that goes with it." Furthermore a report was done by the Cleveland Police who concluded "Attempts to restrict availability of drugs have failed, so far everywhere. If prohibition does not work then an alternative must be found, the most obvious alternative is the legalisation and subsequent regulation of some or all drugs." An advocate of this approach is Shane Collins who said: "Failed policies need to be changed. The current ones are causing an upturn in addicts and thereby turning a small but growing number of our youth into theives and prostitutes and affecting the safety and civil liberties of us all." When asked wether the Met's new line would have any effect on their policy in the future a Cabinet Office spokesperson said "We have no intention
of changing our line on cannabis or other drugs." Mr sajid another member of GDP expressed "The Government as ever misjudges public opinion. Cannabis is essentially a victimless crime. People with conditions such as MS find it
relieves their suffering, yet doctors can't prescribe it." Last year in May there was a festival named Jay Day which attracted 30,000 with no arrests. On May the 5th this year will be the 3rd such event with various soundsystems and information to give people an opportunity to vote with their feet.
