Pepper Spray and Arrests at Seattle N30 (2k) Protests

After relatively little activity from law enforcement most of the day, chaos has erupted in the streets of Seattle
As of 11:39pm PST Thursday police in riot gear had encircled and begun to arrest approximately 100 protestors at 4th and Blanchard in the Westlake area of downtown Seattle. Several dozen protestors have taken refuge in the "Sin 'n Spin", which is currently being surrounded by an estimated 200 officers.

The protests have dwindled from a peak of approximately 5000 protestors at Westlake Park earlier in the day, before groups of protestors began spilling into the streets. There has been a very heavy police presence all day, including several helicoptors canvasing the area. Police made frequent attempts to break up the crowds and force the protestors to leave the streets, and starting about 8:00pm PST there have been several reports of police using pepper spray, rubber bullets, concussion grenades, and (unconfirmed) tear gas in an attempt to disperse protesters.

Activists around the world are celebrating today, after the momentous events of the WTO Ministerial one year ago today.
After a year of the strongest political resistance in decades, activists are looking back over what has been accomplished by the anti-globalization movement.
Since June 18th 1999 (see www.j18.org and http://www.infoshop.org/june18.html), a new coalition movement based on creating societies founded upon ecology, democracy, and ethics has arisen from decades of work on social justice, environmental, and labor issues. For the first time on a large scale, economic polices of the World Bank, the WTO, the International Monetary Fund, and the rest of the institutions which make up the international economy are being directly questioned, not just by the people who's lives and cultures are being destroyed, but an enormous movement around the world.
