Protests against planned agrofuel power plant in Beckton

Beckton protest 4th June
On 31st May and 4th June, banner protests were held against plans to build the UK's first agrofuel power plant in Beckton, London. Around 500 local residents signed a petition against those plans, which was handed to the mayor on 2nd June (with around 100 further signatures having been added since then). The company Blue NG has applied for planning permission to build the UK's first vegetable oil power plant in the UK, in Beckton, Newham. They plan a total of eight such plants overall. In the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill, now going through Parliament, the Government wants to allow the creation of GM human embryos, as the first step towards developing "safe" technology for creating GM babies. The creation of GM babies is not just a hypothetical scenario: leading British scientists, such as Robert Winston and Ian Wilmut, have already patented techniques for doing this, including patenting human semen and embryos.

Orang-utans protest at Unilever's HQ and Factory

Greenpeace folk dressed as Orang-utans have climbed all over Unilever's London HQ and Merseyside factory to tell the company to stop destroying rainforests for palm oil. Palm oil is used in products like Dove and Persil, and the companies Unilever buys from are destroying valuable rainforest and peatland areas - bad news not only for the millions of people who depend on them for their way of life and endangered species such as the orang-utan, but also for the global climate.
