What is democracy today? How does the democracy of activists and indigenous peoples differ from the democracy of representatives, elites and business? what can we learn about democracy from studying the margins of contemporary society?

What does it mean to be 'radical' today? What strategies of resistance are available to those seeking to oppose the neoliberal world order? How can theory illuminate th nature of contemporary politics?

what does the Narmada Dam Protests in India tell us about the nature of contemporary protests and the efforts of peasant and indigenous groups to oppose dispossession? How is the process of accumulation compare with earlier processes such as enclosure and clearance? What can be done to help such movements?

According to its Mission Statement, Notts Indymedia is "committed to offering grassroots... news coverage". Indeed, the editorial guidelines state that "The IMC Collective encourages people and groups to organise horizontally". However, recent changes to the Notts site's editorial guidelines, and the actions of certain members of the collective, suggest that this is not taken seriously.

The following audio was taken during a session at the Knowledge Lab event. It is titled 'Affective Knowledge & Alternative Media' and explores the relation between the conditions of the world and how our feeling for others makes us feel in certain ways. Comment: This session turned out to be more about feminist critical theory than either its application to / or / about the alternative media. Very much a philisophical question, than a practical application of technique. Which, I feel, would have been more useful.

A photo report from the Knowledge Lab and the Peace Conference, both held at Nottingham University.

Over 50 people came together over the weekend at Nottingham University for an event called 'the Knowledge Lab'. The event is aimed at bridging the gap between activism and academia to reflect in a more indepth way on various issues, this time based around 'Knowledge'.

Workshops were based around questions such as 'how do we know'? what is knowledge'? 'where do we gain our knowledge from'? 'does someone hold control over our knowledge'? 'how does gender affect knowledge'? 'how does education effect knowledge'? 'how are our senses affected by advertising and the media'? 'how can suppressed knowledge be released into the mainstream'? Other sessions included a presentation on alternative education projects, an Indymedia session showing people how to use the website and publish news, and an experiment in anarchism called SOMA - Consensus decision making without the mind/body split.

We recorded an interview with one of the organisers of the event and a chat with a 'knowledgelab-regular' about the history and aims of the knowledgelabs. The last recording is part of a session called Open Spaces for Dialogue and Enquiry (OSDE) which looked at knowledge, what it is and how our knowledge is affected.

what are the obligations of the global rich in terms of climate change? Does the interdependence of nations means that traditional national-centric notions of 'obligation' and 'desert' are irrelevant? What is the role and responsibility of the global citizen to our fellow planet dwellers?

What is Britain's relationship to the developing world - and how is this relationship negotiated and retold to suit current needs? What is 'global citizenship' and what does it imply in terms of contemporary politics?

The Peace Movement will be holding the third annual Peace Conference in the Portland Building at Nottingham University from 11-6 on Sunday, February 18. Speakers will include James Howard (Powerswitch), Sue Blount (Green Party) and Craig Murray (former British Ambassador to Uzbekistan).
