This of course makes a mockery of the Human Rights Act and trivialises any concept of 'free speech' that may be left. Dr. Best has always argued his comments have been sensationalised and taken completely out of context but now stands aside Dr. Jerry Vlasak as another animal advocate who cannot enter the UK and join us to celebrate this extraordinary victory for animal rights.

We are building an "eco-building" at ECOWORKS, a community garden project on the Hungerhill allotments in St. Ann's. Volunteers have been working on this exciting project since October, and it's time to put the walls up now! Straw bales are a low-impact, highly insulating and user-friendly building material. The construction process is highly inclusive, satisfying and fun.

A building empty for many years has been occupied. The neighbours constantly fed up with the council inaction, a mess in the garden, drug abusers round the back of the property, windows smashed. Not something you would like to live next door to. Thus, the group has much community support, and now they're secure in their new home, there is much tidying up to do and this has already begun.

Unsatisfied with years of council inaction, an abandoned block of flats on Burns Street, Arboretum, has been occupied and turned into living spaces once again. The new homes, which are owned by the City Council had been left to rot for over 7 years.

The occupiers, who squatted the building early August, have been repairing damage and planting flowers in the garden with local residents. The council have given the new residents a 'notice to leave', stating they would obtain an eviction order through court, if they would not leave within 7 days. There is much support from local residents, as for them, the property has been an eyesore, attracting drug users and causing a general hazard.

Dsei is Europe's largest arms fair and takes place every two years in the ExCel Centre in London's Docklands. Helpfully, the organisers have provided a list of organisers on their website and two of them happen to be in Nottinghamshire...

We spent this years holiday blockading Shell in Co Mayo. Here's my personal report. Please support the Mayo people in their resistance to Shell.

‘Nigeria 3 miles’ said the sign by the T junction, so we knew we were on the right road as we travelled through the massive expanse of bogland that covers most of the north of County Mayo. We had gone over from the UK to spend a few days supporting the Shell to Sea campaign and to learn more about Shell’s refinery and pipeline plans directly from the local people.

Earlier this summer an illegal roadstone quarry at Back Dale Quarry, on Longstone Edge Nr Bakewell was targeted by saboteurs.

This Saturday, 20th August will be the last time the live music festival takes place in the Arboretum, this summer.
