The Nottingham Caribbean Carnival is a celebration of African Caribbean culture which will took place this year on 13th & 14th August in the heart of Nottingham's African Caribbean community.
A two day event which included a parade on Sunday afternoon. The parade showcased professional troupes with local groups and schools participating with troupes and floats, that added to the real community spirit of the Carnival.
They provided the parade with a dazzling array of colourful costumes, lively music and dancing, truly celebrating the energy of Carnival.
The weekends a showcase of new, local and established artists and bands with music, dance tents, fairground stalls, food and craft outlets. The carnival being one of the most colourful and energetic events in Nottingham's summer calendar."
I had a nice time, except getting wet a couple of times and your corespondent / photographer, falling of the back of the stage on saturday night!! I will try and be more careful in the future!!
The event is the continuation of the 'Rock 'n Reggae' event the was held on the forest for some years. But that was a different event.
Now, there's a curfew of 10.00pm. A licensing condition to be able to hold the event at all. I think it is soooo grudging of the authorities. I mean does Mardi Gras finish at such an early time? Of course not, nor any other similar event in the world.
Then there's the security fencing, high police presence including the C.C.T.V van parked in the middle of the field. It does appear that authorities begrudgingly allow Carnival to happen at all. In fact, last year it didn't. I think it would rather such events to disappear into the mists of time with tame 'council-run do's' being the only one on offer.
