Wednesday is International Radioactive Waste Action Day

The date was chosen to commemorate the worst known radioactive waste disaster -- a reprocessing storage tank explosion, following loss of cooling water, in the Ural Mountains of Siberia on Sept. 29, 1957 . An entire region contaminated, hundreds immediately killed and the poisoning and death of many more since, due to the lingering radioactive contamination of a vast area of the environment. Private Members Bill to set light to a smouldering controversy

A Member of Parliament is about to introduce a Private Members Bill, which if successful, would significantly reduce the amount of opencast coal produced in England. It will also reduce impacts on local communities by bringing policies in England into line with those operating in Scotland and Wales by introducing the need for 500 metre Buffer zones between opencast sites and areas of settlement. New councillors were reminded yesterday that Manchester Airport is still the 'elephant in the room' when it comes to the local Climate Change Action Plan – since the Council have refused to include the flight emissions from the Airport in their carbon reduction targets. The 9ft inflatable elephant highlighted that the Council's much-lauded plans are totally undermined by the omission of the Airport– especially considering that Manchester City Council own 55% of Manchester Airports Group.
