Two climate protesters who blockaded the road entrance to the World Freight Centre of Manchester Airport were found guilty yesterday of obstruction of the highway at Trafford Magistrates Court. The two defendants had pleaded not guilty on the grounds that the expansion of the Airport would have significant impacts on local homes and globally in contributing to climate change - and that their protest was a reasonable use of the road given that other methods of redress had been tried.

In May 2010, seventeen people took direct action at Manchester Airport, temporarily shutting it down. They did this to stop some of the 5 million tonnes of carbon emissions that the airport is responsible for annually and in opposition to plans to destroy local homes and biodiversity spots to expand the World Freight Centre.

The seventeen defendants face two trials at Trafford Magistrates Court (M33 7NR). Come to court to show your support. Climate defence is not an offence

Manchester students vote to boycott RBS

The University of Manchester Students Union has passed a motion to boycott the Royal Bank of Scotland. The motion, passed last Wednesday 20th October, included a resolution to “cease all relationships with the Royal Bank of Scotland” for being in breach of the Union's ethical policy. RBS currently leases branch space from the Oxford Road premises of the Students Union. The boycott will require the company to vacate those premises. RBS will also be barred from any marketing or recruiting opportunities at all Students Union events. Read more | 1 comment >>

Huntington Lane Coal Mine Eviction?

The eviction process at the Huntington Lane coal mine site near Telford, Shropshire appears to have begun, but no eviction notice has yet been served. Six Manchester residents from the group Manchester Plane Stupid pleaded not guilty to their charge of aggravated trespass as they claim that in the light of Manchester airports contribution to runaway climate change, it was the necessary action to take. The trial will take place on February 21st 2011 and will be the first climate change trial of its kind in Manchester where expert climate scientists will defend the six against the polluting activities of Manchester airport.

The date was chosen to commemorate the worst known radioactive waste disaster -- a reprocessing storage tank explosion, following loss of cooling water, in the Ural Mountains of Siberia on Sept. 29, 1957 . An entire region contaminated, hundreds immediately killed and the poisoning and death of many more since, due to the lingering radioactive contamination of a vast area of the environment.
