You are warmly invited to join a talk and discussion on the situation in Syria, followed by a planning meeting, on Wednesday 27th November, from 6.30 to 9.30pm.

Venue: London Action Resource Centre (LARC), 62 Fieldgate Street (corner of Parfett Street), Whitechapel, London E1 1ES
Map:  http://tinyurl.com/lcoppur

Talk and discussion on the Syrian crisis (6.30-7.45pm):

Rami Hussein (see bio below) will speak about the ongoing crisis in Syria and the humanitarian and political situation in the country. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity for questions and discussion.

Bio: Rami is an Anglo-Syrian brought up in Damascus. He studied medicine at Damascus University and left Syria in 1990 to continue his medical education in the UK, and to live - in his words - in a "relatively freer country". He is an orthopaedic surgeon practicing in the UK, and is married with 3 children, the oldest of whom is nine. Rami says he has been opposed to corruption since well before the Syrian revolution started, and has been a supporter of non-violent protests from the beginning of the revolution. He is a member of the Syrian National Coordination Body, which he says is against violence, sectarianism and foreign military intervention in Syria, and calls for a peaceful transition of power to democratic civil government. He is also a member of the Syrian Medical Committee.

Planning Meeting (7.45-9.30pm):

After the talk and discussion, we will continue to make plans for our upcoming Peace Pilgrimage for Syria, to take place in central London on Tuesday 10th December, International Human Rights Day.

For more details of this action, please visit our new website:

n.b. This is a free event, but a donation towards the upkeep of the LARC would be welcome.
Also, please note that our group is new and currently operates without any funds, so any donations towards our expenses, e.g. for flyer and poster printing, would be very welcome.

In peace and solidarity,

Can you please tell me why this is advertised as non-partisan? when it clearly is not. You have an anti-regime speaker at this event. Not exactly balanced

"Lack of freedom" in ME countries

27.11.2013 06:20

Some key myths
Some key myths

The "lack of freedom" in Middle-Eastern countries stems partly from the role of the family over the individual, partly from the fact that they are still under pressure from old colonial powers.

Thus, it is not a phenomenom which will disappear by a change of government.

Only non-Middle-Easterners - i.e. foreign powers - will make such a connection.

The position of the military is due to geography:

Syria has had Israel as its neighbor for 65 years, which has forced the country to put large efforts into defense.

After 1970, the policy of Hafez al-Assad has been to maintain a status quo, with a defense strong enough not to lose a war.

This, however was not enough for Tel Aviv and Washington, who since at least 2007 have been planning for a "proxy war".

The slogans of this movement, when it started, were highly contradictory: "freedom" and "Islamic State".

The movement was not at all non-violent, as it presented itself in Western media.

The slanted coverage by Western press proved the involvement of intelligence services, omitting all acts of volence by the rebels.

Already before the start of the events, a large cargo of weapons fron Iraq was seized.

"while in the very first week of the Syrian crisis, 15 March 2011 to 21 March 2011, 110 unarmed Syrian anti-riot policemen were sniped by highly trained mercenary snipers all over Daraa alone, that was reported on all Syrian based media, but not on any foreign media

The unrest was organized mainly by the Muslim Brotherhood, around fundamentalist preachers i Deraa, and with arms stashes in mosques.

Some key myths:

The movement petered out towards Summer 2011, after which they proclaimed open violence.

After a visit to Turkey by CIA Director David Petraeus, the "Free Syrian Army" was proclaimed - which quickly made a reputation for crimes against civilians, notably in Homs where abductions and killings ran in the hundreds.
