Stop The Killing Of Cyclists - Protest at TfL HQ on Friday 29 November

StopTheKilling | 17.11.2013 11:24 | Culture | London

After 13 deaths and innumerable injuries on London's roads over the last year, (5 deaths just in the space of ten days this month), London's cyclists have had enough.

Transport for London needs our peaceful protest to be brought right to their door - the HQ of those who have failed to make our streets safe for our children or our pensioners to cycle on, never mind fit adults.

- We need Amsterdam levels of money spent on London's Cycling Safety NOW.
- We need at least 2 formal Board Members on TfL Board.
- We need ALL Boroughs to be spending at least 10% of their Mayoral approved transport budgets spent on cycling infrastructure.
- We need all Borough and TfL Transport Heads qualified to deliver Dutch Style safety or be fired.
- Children, pensioners and inexperienced adults should not be forced to share space with HGVs and Buses.
- We need a FULL Integrated safely designed segregated cycle network in London ASAP.
- ALL dangerous junctions need to be redesigned to Dutch standards ASAP.
- Ban on any vehicles whose drivers cannot see adjacent road-users

Cycling Safety needs to be TOP of TfL's priorities, as should befit a 21st century city looking for ways to tackle congestion and pollution. If Crossrail was predicted to KILL 120 workers during its construction, work would be halted immediately.
CYCLISTS are just as important.

Please come to this mass cyclist die-in and vigil and spread the word. Wear skull masks/death costumes, dress in black, put some fake blood on an old t-shirt.

Bring candles and night-lights and something soft and waterproof to lie down on. Pedetrians and people without bikes also welcome are all drivers including bus and lorry/HGV drivers who support the campaign for safer cycling.

Bring placards calling for an end to cyclists deaths and for TfL to take the issue seriously.

Schedule:
5pm Vigil
5.30-5.45 Die-In
5.45-6.30 Rally and Vigil.

Address: London TFL HQ, Palestra Building, 197 Blackfriars Road, London SE1 8NJ

Date: Friday 29th November 2013

Evem as a cyclist, I don't get this

18.11.2013 08:39

I'm a cyclist and a driver. More the former than the latter. I don't get this.

99.9% of all the crazy I see is down to the cyclists. I see them weaving in traffic, sitting in people's blind spots, shoot through red lights, ride on the pavement at high speed and generally act like idiots. My favourite this week is I was nearly wiped out (on my bike) another cyclist who came out of a turning wide whilst drinking coffee. I mean WTF? I imagine a lot of accidents are due to being reckless assholes like this.

I think we need to consider that there are idiots on both sides in the statistics and stop just blaming the motorists and Tfl for the problems.

I'm well aware of the half blind idiot car drivers and the ones who intentionally cause trouble as well. That's what my GoPro is for.

Get more people cycling- safety in numbers!

Although I totally get the point of this... I'm a cyclist and it would be fantastic to see more cycle lanes and road safety measures... I'm concerned that a die in is only adding to the 47% of people who don't cycle because they say they are too scared. This kind of spectacle will not help get people on their bikes... can we not do extra critical masses or fun bike games days instead? Or anything that will make people feel happy about cycling rather than like they are about to be flattened to a pulp at any moment they start pushing pedals.

good luck to those that support and take part in this much needed action.

and a word to those seeking to blame cyclists all the time. cars and trucks and buses are vehicles that weigh tons, literally machines, the onus therefore should be on the drivers and owners of those machines to ensure they are watching out for cyclists, not on cyclists to be on the look out for bad drivers, ignorant drivers, or to worship motor vehicles as kings of the road. cars and other motor vehicles kill many thousands of people around the world annually. but for safe practise, cyclists should wear helmets, have lights and be careful, but we have to be careful mostly BECAUSE of motor vehicles. lets not forget that.
