Maybe just a confusion of terms?

But let me go back and rewrite that first sentence slightly.
AIDS is the acronym for a collection of SYMPTOMS and was assigned to this collection of symptoms before it was known what the causes might be. That's right, causes PLURAL, because it is not all that unusual for a symptom set to result form more than one disease. Sometimes symptoms are unique to a disease which makes diagnosis easy. But sometimes there is more than one disease that can cause pretty much the same set of symptoms. When new diseases are involved, first the main (most common) disease that causes this set of symptoms is discovered. But later it might be discovered that some less common disease can cause the same set of symptoms. In the interval between, doctors are puzzled by these few atypical patients.
Because the collection of AIDS symptoms isn't precisely the same in each person infected with HIV, if there was a minor (in terms of frequency) other disease cuasing pretty much the same symptom set going to take some time to solve the mystery.
