Everything instore half price today!!!

For this year's Buy Nothing Day, the Hijackers decided to resurect one of our favourite projects. The Half Price Sale.

The plan is simplicity itself. Print up a bundle of "EVERYTHING INSTORE HALF PRICE TODAY" t-shirts, then wander into shops, tidy things up and watch chaos ensue.

A dozen Hijacker secret agents came along for the action, and visited Nike Town, Top Shop, HMV, Selfridges and others on the day. Nike as always were the least impressed with our antics, with a pack of over eager security guards ushering us out of the store within about 5 mins. Top Shop were far to vast to catch us, and totally confused by our actions.

assistant with clip board: what are you doing here.
Hijacker: just here to help
acb: where are you from.
Hijacker: I'm from London.
acb: no one told me you where coming(pause) why are you here
Hijacker: just here to help
acb: but your are not on the plan(leaves confused)

HMV were clear winners with a security guard exclaiming:

"You have to stop tidying things up, you're being illegal, you have to leave!"

okay great well done. but this is kind of a lot of use isn't it really now come on!

so you confuse shoppers into causing mayhem for the people that work in the shop but so what? that's a bit of an off target way of attracting attention for yourselves.... if you were concerned enough to group together why not make a real attempt at something and nick a load of stuff then piss it away in the street outside?... or whatever///

Fun

Well, unlike the previous commenter I think this was a cool idea. Yeah, it won't change the world, but playing around with the big retailers' heads has got to be a good thing.

Attention and self reference

05.01.2007 10:17

Hi,
did your "operation" get any attention in the press, in particular in the mainstream press? Did it have any impact outside the locations of your action? What were the effects on the "normal" consumers in the shops (and maybe outside, too)?
I am asking these questions with a serious interest. I try to understand which kind of subversive action is most efficient. In your particular case i have the impression that the operation certainly caused confusion within the location of action. But it might not have had lots of effects outside and also "the normal consumer" might not got an inspiration to question consume culture and all the things that come along with it. My impression is that you operation was certainly fun for the participants and contributed to your group identity. So it might be something self referential like "enlightenment for the enlighted" ("Aufklärung für Aufgeklärte").
Any way, i would be happy if you could convince me of the contrary.
Best regards,

Kris
