The Manchester Awkward Squad | 22.04.2015 13:01 | Culture | Social Struggles

A group unhappy with the gentrification of Manchester and the decline in people who are awkward to the status quo have got together to start the first of what we hope will be an annual event.

The Manchester Awkward Squad will be hosting a free radical book fair and a selection of workshops on Saturday 2nd of May at the People's History Museum (location details below) together with stalls offering veggie and vegan food all for FREE !

The workshops will be covering..

Bike maintenance
Opening and running a free shop
Copyleft software
Sign making
Making clothes
Web design
Creative Writing

The bookfair is a chance for you to expand your library, donate books to others and share your views of radical writing in all languages.

Doors open at 1030am and close when we all go home !

The clue is in the title "everybody welcome".

Update - computer equipment giveaway

23.04.2015 09:31

Some great news the people at PC-ReRun have agreed to support the event by giving away a limited number of recycled laptops. PC-ReRun takes equipment that would in the past have ended up in landfill and replaces the Micro$oft software with free open source software and then - - - - -- gives it away !

Great news

23.04.2015 12:06

Not sure who the people are behind this but can I just say how great it is to see an event of this kind taking place in Manchester. The activist scene has been very quiet recently so I am really pleased and I will be there together with as many friends as I can bring.

Ignoring the troll and moving on

The event is clearly not cancelled. Would one of the mods hide the stupid comment above.

It's simply so good to see events like this springing up all over the country. I have met up with other groups doing the whole PC recycle thing and it's a great idea because a lot of old electrical equipment ends up in developing world countries (West Africa a lot) and of course sticking it to Microslime is always a nice feeling :-)

Great initiative everyone and good luck for the day, I'm sorry I will not be there to join you.

Love.

Annie

Great news, well done everyone

So good to see people coming together and putting on stuff like this. Here in Bristol we do a number of events with the same sort of thought behind them. The old Indymedia Bristol site is sadly long gone but do take a look at the Alternative Bristol site which has involvement from a lot of the old Bristol Indymedia crew and is a good list of activities in the Bristol and Weast Country area.
