BAE Systems - some good news for once

Disarm DSEI | 06.11.2013 12:26 | Anti-militarism

Warship factory forced to close.

The arms trade takes a hit

Great news today as it was announced that BAE Systems will be closing Portsmouth, Govan and Scotstoun naval shipyards. Portsmouth will remain open until work is completed on the two un-needed aircraft carriers so there are still opportunities for local activists to disrupt the war machine.

Some people have focused on the job losses associated with these closures however this is something we are pleased about. These individuals chose to work for arms dealers so they deserve what they get

It's all about Karma people !

1,775 jobs lost, nothing to be celebrating.

06.11.2013 13:50

You might be happy to see 1,775 people losing their jobs but others do not. Yes these people work for BAE Systems and yes they made warships but perhaps you could suggest what else they could do in areas where defence manufacturers are not only the dominant employer but often the only one who provides work for people with certain skills.

The UK defence industry represents 10% of UK manufacturing, employing over 300,000 people and generating over £35 billion per year to the UK economy.

It's also worth noting that many other companies provide equipment or services to the MoD including - Ford, Tesco, BOSE, BT, Renault, Rayban, Dunlop, Phillips and many others, are we to assume their staff are also subject to your 'karma' ?

Time to grow up.

Grow up?

06.11.2013 14:10

The Trade Unionist simply Illustrates the dead end (in this case literally!) of the unions. Never mind what is produced, capital and work are god until resources run out, and then? In fact technology increasingly is making more and more people superfluous to the commodity racket every day. It is they who must update their map of reality.

All are to blame

There is no excuse, if you work for anybody that supports the war machine you are in the wrong.

Peace

1,775 arms manufacturers out of work today

suggestions ?

As I said, "The UK defence industry represents 10% of UK manufacturing, employing over 300,000 people and generating over £35 billion per year to the UK economy"

What practicle suggestions do you have about replacing those jobs and the jobs of the other industries who are in part reliant on the defence industry. How are you going to replace that £35 billion per year ? Shall we close some hospitals or schools perhaps ?
