The 103 thousand pound eviction of st pauls cathedral

Mr Freedom | 16.03.2012 15:10 | Occupy Everywhere | Free Spaces | Sheffield

a recent freedom of information request against the city of london police has shown the true extent of the city's might against st paul's occupy lsx

Recant freedom of information request accepted by the city of london police regarding occupy lsx evictions

There were 464 officers present at the evictions of the St Paul’s
cathedral campers

The most senior officer present was Temporary Superintendent McGinley

policing operation name of the eviction was ‘Hawley

The cost of policing the eviction of the campers from St Pauls was
£103,981

tho this is JUST for the city of london police's force more costs would of been incurred over the bailiffs costs

this just goes to show that the city of london flexed its muscles to show that they will protect the capitalist parasites at what ever cost to you and me

Not what it seems

As usual numbers have to be looked into before conclusions are drawn. Most of that cost was in wages and those wages would have been paid regardless of where the coppers happened to be.

Yes thos e police could have been more usefully deployed nicking some real villains......... but no, they were taken away from 'front line' policing as it is known and used to do the city of londons bidding. Cheaper than hiring a squad of baliffs to do the job eh.

Take the money from the student unions

16.03.2012 16:29

Given that student unions are fuelling radicalism amongst the middle and upper class young I say take that money from the student unions.

Your money, down the drain!

16.03.2012 16:40

It'll be a lot more expensive than the FOI request shows. You've got salaries, overtime, fuel costs, hire of equipment, facilitating of the media, bailiffs costs, insurance, spurious claims for compensation made for non existent injuries, lost time through sick leave and that's all before we get into the cost of the operation to disrupt LSX. Phone calls, dinners, lunch for friendly journalists and local business owners, undercovers, facilitation of the church and so on.

The final cost will be way above the figure you have in your FOI request. What you have to understand is that the operation to evict OSLX began months before the actual night.

It'll be horrendous expense.

Reality in action.

It's not so bad - the costs will be offset...

16.03.2012 19:40

...against all the bribes they will receive from tabloid journalists for exposés on how the protesters are actually all millionaires or drug addicts (or both) or something. ;-)

now hang on a minute

16.03.2012 21:02

Given that the protestors knew that:
a) they were going to be evicted (it wasn't as if it wasn't predictable)
b) it would costs thousands

I would argue that the protestors are to blame for wasting public money.
If they left before the eviction, then this money would not have been spent.

Ergo...... it was:
a) in the protestors power to save the money
b) in their knowledge that they had this power

They simply decided not to do so. So, this article is bullshit. Its like blaming yourself for something you knowingly did.

As an analogy:
A bit like a fat person blaming the cake manufacturers after he has eaten a big cake
Shouldn't of eaten the cake because he knew it would make him fat. Yet he did it anyway, and then blames someone else.

16.03.2012 22:01

"I would argue that the protestors are to blame for wasting public money.
If they left before the eviction, then this money would not have been spent."

And there you have it.

The right to assembly, protest and freedom of speech, the great cornerstones of the unconditional liberty of the people, being fused with the right of government to suppress it with the use of public funds.

There is a great and sordid evil stalking the pages of our hallowed domain and a malevolent force it is too. It is concerned only with oppression and slavery. It is miserable, slovenly, treacherous and misanthropic.

Reject, dismiss, overcome, defeat.

Hang yourself.

@Hang yourself

16.03.2012 23:44

i agree right to assemble free speech and the right to protest are all things that need to be fought for and the occupy movement *tho i was only there at the end * was a good movement and showed how to take a stand occupying the court yard of st pauls

My arguement is this

why is it that the big coperations that didnt like to see the occupiers be allowed the rule of law
and be allowed to use the boots on the ground the 460 officers costing over 100 thousand pounds to evict *JUST policing costs *

in a time of deep cuts this cost is totally unacceptable and outrages

Nope. But the author does appear to support it.

"The right to assembly, protest and freedom of speech, the great cornerstones of the unconditional liberty of the people, being fused with the right of government to suppress it with the use of public funds."

Yes but........ they've had their protest. How long can you let it go on till it gets inconvenient for other people in society who are going about their lawful business. Eg. the church couldn't really get on with their day-to-day business. What happens then? The church and worshippers start to protest about the protestors because they can't open their doors to visitors? That would be stupid. Common sense has to prevail at somepoint.

If they were 99% (about 59.4 million people), then yes - I would agree with you because it is a democratic majority. But, we are talking about a small group of people (200?). They say they are the 99%, but they aren't. They are the 0.0003%. There is probably more people inconvienced and affected by the protest than the protestors themselves.

Clearly, this eviction has inconvenienced the protestors and suddenly that all becomes a big thing in their eyes. Yet it is no different to what they have been doing to other people all along.

The 99% isn't the 99%, otherwise more people would have turned up or been involved (like 99% of them?). "99%" is inaccurate by a huge margin.

The church was given an opportunity to speak its own voice and to stand fast. What was then heard and done was god-less.

The business of this is for those who have no future and do not speak for the people, but only for themselves. They are alone now.

Common sense is nothing more than the prevailing prejudice..and your version of it also now has no future.

These are the things the protesters exposed, that is the value of their worth.

Are you angry, or is it envy that causes you to attack them?
