Most CCTV cameras don't even have a tape in them?

How many murderers and rapists have been caught and taken off the streets with CCTV? Sorry, but I and the majority of people support it.

er ... actually, not very many at all really. Usually, there are problems with resolution, facial coverings or crime displacement away from camaeras.

Poorly supported argument for CCTVs Ruby - the great UK public have simply bought into their alleged benefits for crime prevention/ reduction when most of the time they are used for policing protesters and ensuring panopticon-based compliance.

"Most CCTV cameras don't even have a tape in them?"

I think we realise that, but it isn't the point. They cost time and money to replace, so the more that are destroyed, the less likely they are to put more up.

Excellent.

25.11.2011 13:26

See, now this is a good example of taking the right approach.

Police authorities in the UK are always stretched in terms of being able to deploy numbers on any given day. This was seen in the riots.

CCTV cameras are the eyes and ears of forward planning and when major protests take place you have 8 or 9 people sitting in a control room passing on information to police stations from CCTV cameras. This allows the police to deploy targeted numbers of officers at strategic points to control the protest. So you see the ridiculous sight of thousands of people being controlled by a single line of police.

CCTV cameras play a major part in the deployment of limited police resources to maximum effect.

Remove the cameras and you have scratched out the eyes of the people who are paid to ensure your protest FAILS all the damn time.

This is an excellent post.

More of it.

I don't have any figures to hand, but, as I understand it, not many. The thing is when you see clips of CCTV identifications on Crimewatch etc, they show you those clips because they need visual material for broadcast on TV. They don't show the billions of hours of surveillance footage that record nothing, and they don't show you the murderers and rapists who are never caught on CCTV. I agree that many people THINK that CCTV is a good thing however

I don't and know of a hell of a lot of people that don't either.

You've been trolling this site for years if it's the same Ruby of yesteryear. If so give it up, idiot.

I think Ruby makes a valid albeit misguided point

25.11.2011 17:57

Many members of the public do BELIEVE that CCTV is a good thing because it discourages crime. They believe this because of what they are told in the media, thus attacking cameras without providing a well reasoned report to accompany the action in the grand scheme of things is rather pointless. Unless it is explained to the public why this invasion of civil liberties is immoral, why it has a high failure rate when used as evidence in court (grainy images, poor quality, etc), why we must unite to fight this menace. The message will simply be lost and all that is seen by Joe Average is an act of vandalism not an action of revolutionary struggle.

I would interested to see a well reasoned argument to accompany the action. Anyone can smash a window or set fire to a car, but to use that image to convey an important message. Now that is something very powerful indeed. Messages make movements after all.

Don't be quick to judge

So much deletion

25.11.2011 19:49

With so many comments being deleted (or "hidden" as IMC likes to call its form of censorship), it is difficult to (a) keep a sense of continuity for what comments are responding to which because the previous comments are now deleted and (b) fathom just why IMC are censoring comments anyway when several that were on this thread earlier are not offensive, were on-topic and expressed cogent views.

This is just one thread of several I have been following today (the other being  https://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2011/11/489092.html ) and the comments are disappearing from these threads faster than they can be put up. What's the point of commenting if the comments are going to be selectively cut for no good - at least no good stated - reason?

IMC - can you answer this please?

"Insurrectionary Anarchist" almost never puts forward detailed or carefully thought-out cases for any of the often wildly irresponsible and inflammatory posts s/he puts on Indymedia, but in this case I pretty much support these actions. First the CCTV shown here is pointing at demonstrators, 2nd Greeks were until recently ruled by a pukka, full-on CIA-backed torturing-political-prisoners Fascist regime, so Greek radicals are well aware what the apparatus of state surveillance can be used to achieve, finally even the UK police admit CCTV does little to actually solve anti-social crime. These is an issue of the public BELIEVING that CCTV helps deter crime, but these anarchists are clearly not attacking CCTV cameras in mom-and-pop stores or on the entrances to housing projects etc
