Most CCTV cameras don't even have a tape in them?

"Most CCTV cameras don't even have a tape in them?"

I think we realise that, but it isn't the point. They cost time and money to replace, so the more that are destroyed, the less likely they are to put more up.

Excellent.

See, now this is a good example of taking the right approach.

Police authorities in the UK are always stretched in terms of being able to deploy numbers on any given day. This was seen in the riots.

CCTV cameras are the eyes and ears of forward planning and when major protests take place you have 8 or 9 people sitting in a control room passing on information to police stations from CCTV cameras. This allows the police to deploy targeted numbers of officers at strategic points to control the protest. So you see the ridiculous sight of thousands of people being controlled by a single line of police.

CCTV cameras play a major part in the deployment of limited police resources to maximum effect.

Remove the cameras and you have scratched out the eyes of the people who are paid to ensure your protest FAILS all the damn time.

This is an excellent post.

More of it.

I think Ruby makes a valid albeit misguided point

Many members of the public do BELIEVE that CCTV is a good thing because it discourages crime. They believe this because of what they are told in the media, thus attacking cameras without providing a well reasoned report to accompany the action in the grand scheme of things is rather pointless. Unless it is explained to the public why this invasion of civil liberties is immoral, why it has a high failure rate when used as evidence in court (grainy images, poor quality, etc), why we must unite to fight this menace. The message will simply be lost and all that is seen by Joe Average is an act of vandalism not an action of revolutionary struggle.

I would interested to see a well reasoned argument to accompany the action. Anyone can smash a window or set fire to a car, but to use that image to convey an important message. Now that is something very powerful indeed. Messages make movements after all.

Don't be quick to judge

"Insurrectionary Anarchist" almost never puts forward detailed or carefully thought-out cases for any of the often wildly irresponsible and inflammatory posts s/he puts on Indymedia, but in this case I pretty much support these actions. First the CCTV shown here is pointing at demonstrators, 2nd Greeks were until recently ruled by a pukka, full-on CIA-backed torturing-political-prisoners Fascist regime, so Greek radicals are well aware what the apparatus of state surveillance can be used to achieve, finally even the UK police admit CCTV does little to actually solve anti-social crime. These is an issue of the public BELIEVING that CCTV helps deter crime, but these anarchists are clearly not attacking CCTV cameras in mom-and-pop stores or on the entrances to housing projects etc

CCTV boom has failed to slash crime, say police -
