ironic sponsored ad of the week

rikki | 17.10.2010 09:39

the independent newspaper is surely having a larff! their short film report on the crude awakening protest yesterday is preceded by an announcement from their sponsors, exoonmobil. you couldn't make it up.

the independent newspaper online, has a short film report on yesterday's blockade of coryton oil refinery.

unfortunately, the advert they're showing before it is one for exoonmobil, in which an actress tells us how wonderful exxonmobil are for building two new ports to bring gas "securely" into the uk, without all the need for those troublesome pipelines, that inevitably lead to war. well, actually she doesn't exactly say that, but you get the idea.

"crude awakening, sponsored by mobilexxon" - i'm lovin' it.

well exxon has gone, and now it's HSBC, which isn't all that much of an improvement, but loses the irony.

Some basic concepts of English company law

Correct me if I'm wrong....... but it isn't YOUR newspaper or website.
They can do what the they want with it because they OWN it.

Unless you own shares in the holding company, then you have no right to say what they can or can't do with advertisement. Get used to it.

Your post, while technically correct, shows an astounding lack of common sense and lack of understanding of the term "irony". The fact that the Independent can legally put whatever content they want on their website is absolutely, completely and utterly irrelevant to the point of the story.

And don't you think ExxonMobil or whatever they are called will be pissed off themselves at having their ad placed next to an article that will probably be read by people who don't much like them?

Personally I blame automated advertising systems that try to place ads by related stories based on things like keywords. That's why you often see gay or interracial marriage ads on neo-Nazi websites - the keywords match!
