Middlesex University occupation continues

imc-uk-features | 12.05.2010 23:47 | Education

On May 4th, Middlesex University students occupied the executive board room on Trent Park campus in protest at the management's decision to close the entire philosophy department, after a meeting with the Dean and Deputy Vice Chancellor was cancelled. The following day, they occupied the entire building, following a rally attended by at least 100 people. Over a week on, occupants are stilling holding strong and organising various events and activities.

Link to audio recording of Tariq Ali at an event held outside the Mansion Building, as public access to the building had been denied. Shortly before the talk the remaining students vacated the building to join the crowd outside and to hear Tariq Ali speak.

Worth updating

I think the current situation is that the occupation at Trent Park has ended (there was a one night occupation of some library space that followed), some staff have been suspended for alleged involvement, not sure if some students are facing legal charges, UCU and the students' union are making ineffectual whimpering noises as usual. There was a demo at Hendon campus today and there were tents up and a minor cop presence, not sure if they're planning on setting up camp.
